FEEDBACK ON RECENT CAMPS AND SEMINARS BY KATIE
Over the past ten years, I have participated as a student in many lessons, clinics, and camps taught by world class agility instructors. On April 18, I took a one day handling seminar with seven other lucky students that was taught by Katie Trachte of HyCaliber K-9s in Sandgate, Vermont. Dogs of different breeds and all jump heights (4” to 24”) attended, handled by humans that came from backgrounds with a variety of training experiences.
Katie was GREAT! The seminar was one of the very best that I have ever attended. I have a young, high drive BC, so I am challenged by my dog’s speed and over-the-top enthusiasm. Katie is very good at showing me how to handle and at convincing me that I CAN handle my dog. She also gives me training advice, helps me with my timing, and keeps me positive. Her instruction is very valuable to me,.
The best thing about Katie Trachte was summarized by my husband, a non-agilitizer, who watched part of the seminar just for fun. He said that Katie was very good at customizing her message specifically for each individual handler and trainer. He was amazed that a young trainer like Katie is so patient her human and dog students and that she is so insightful into each one’s needs. Her methods are motivational for both dog and handler, and, while being very specific about her expectations, she keeps the lessons enjoyable and light-hearted.
Each person at the seminar had a great day, learned a lot, and can’t wait until the next seminar is offered by Katie. She is excellent with any breed of dog who has any type of agility training challenge. I highly recommend that anyone that is interested in being a better agility trainer and handler make whatever arrangements are necessary to drive, fly, walk, or swim to Katie’s next agility camp!
The seminar/workshop was excellent ! You work your a___ off and give such individual and positive instruction with humor to boot! Very nice people. I got home and made a big ole pot of spaghetti and ate loads of it! My hubby asked so what did you learn? In between huge mouthfuls I was actually able to rattle off things. It was great to watch videos in such high resolution and really see what you and your dog are doing re: the system.
Finn and I have just started taking classes from Katie and we also attended the Video Analysis Handling/Proofing Seminar she conducted last Sunday. I came to Katie because my dog was exhibiting what I believed was ‘shut down’ behavior at trials. In our very first private lesson, she was able to identify Finn’s issues and offered suggestions and gave me instructions and homework to start working through this unwanted ring behavior. Before I started taking classes from Katie, I did not even really understand the sport of agility. Now I understand that it is a team sport…that Finn and I get to work together to move through a course with speed, efficiency and fun! It has been unbelievable to see what we have already achieved in such a short amount of time under Katie’s guidance. It has been amazing to see how important foundation work is and how it translates into a dog that totally understands what is expected of him, making it easier and even much more fun for both of us. Katie is clear and comprehensive in her instruction – we learn not only what we need to know but why we need to know it. She gives great feedback, both encouraging words and constructive criticism. I am so grateful to have Katie’s experience, knowledge, drive and passion for this sport. It is exactly what anyone who would like to be involved in the sport of agility should look for in an instructor!
"The chance to run with my dog and then review the video the same day was very informative. Katie sets up her courses to easily illustrate the main principles of the Awesome Paws Handling System. I had several "aha" moments where everything finally came together. Katie also offers lots of opportunities for individual attention during her workshops."
I almost didn’t go to the seminar. I am a 63 year old with a two year old Chinook that is smart and quick, smarter and quicker than I. I felt that I was too old to start a new dog, but Katie showed me otherwise. Katie was patient and kind in her instruction, taking each participants abilities into consideration. That is not to say she didn’t run the socks off of us. I went home excited about the prospect of actually being able to handle my young dog and for her to achieve all that she can with me as her handler.
It was amazing to me that Katie can watch the handler and the dog and see so many details. Then to be able to show them to you and explain what you can and should do to improve your handling. And you see your dog respond immediately to your much clearer direction. What a great day. I can’t wait for Camp and neither can Qannik, she told me so.
The Video Analysis Handling/Proofing Seminar was amazing! Even though my husband videotapes my runs at trials, it was Katie's critical eye and guidance that pinpointed how I need to improve my position and timing. I also learned so much from watching the other participants' runs. I came away from this weekend with a much better understanding of Bailey, the dog I brought and my second agility dog. Katie taught me how to tailor my training to this dog's needs, rather than simply repeating the training style I used with my first dog - one size does not fit all! I've had one agility class since the seminar and applying what Katie taught in the seminar has made a remarkable difference in Bailey's attitude and performance! Thanks, Katie!
